What Can You Do to Break More Clays at the Skeet Range?

Although any day at the skeet range is a good day, your day can be made better with one great shot after another. By following these tips, you can break more clays from the trap thrower. In fact, you may be able to stand out from some of the 5.09 million people in the United States who participated in clay shooting in 2018.

1. Know Your Gun

If you really want to be successful, you need to know your gun. For instance, you need to be certain you have the right barrel firing first and that you get the safety off before attempting to shoot. While this may seem obvious, too many novice skeet shooters start shooting without knowing their weapon.

All it takes is one small mistake to keep you from hitting your target. Therefore, the better you know your gun, the better you’ll shoot it. Take plenty of time to get familiar with your gun before you use it with a clay pigeon launcher.

2. Do Some Dry Runs

For the best results, practice with some dry runs. Once you’re certain that your gun is empty, practice mounting it. You can do this in the comfort of your own home before you start shooting clays from a trap thrower.

Start by taking your gun up and placing it on your shoulder in a natural manner. As you do, imagine your target in the sky. Swing your gun in a way that follows your target. If you for a short time every few days, you’ll hone your skills. Your shots will be more natural and, as a result, your aim will improve.

3. Keep a Balanced Stance

Your balance is just as important as your aim. If you’re off-balanced, your accuracy will suffer. To improve your balance, stand with one foot ahead of the other and place your feet shoulder-width apart. You want about 60% of your weight to be on the front foot.

When you’re ready to take the shot, avoid shifting your feet. You should keep them firmly planted as you move your sight onto the target.

4. Use a Good Shell

Even if you take a bad shot, a good shell may be able to compensate for your mistake. Furthermore, it gives you more confidence on the range.

Everyone has their own preferences for ammo. In an effort to determine which shells you prefer, you should try out several different types of ammo. Get the trap thrower ready and launch your clays. After you’ve tested out different ammo, you should have a clear favorite.

5. Practice with the Right Trap Thrower

Not all shooting ranges are created equal, just as not all trap throwers are created equal. Whether you practice with a clay pigeon launcher on your own property or you shoot at the range, you need a quality launcher.

For the best experience, look for a skeet thrower that is made with high-quality materials and good workmanship. Specifically, seek out a thrower made in the United States. You should also look for a machine that is easy to adjust and one that is compatible with your preferred targets.
